China 8/31-9/9/00
Introduction

The following pages will share our observations and photos of our very short, and educational trip through a country that has so much to offer its people, but at times, gives so little to them.

I have broken the site down into 6 slideshows. As you can see, some of the pages are descriptions and comments of what we have seen, some are our observations of China’s political system, and the balance are slideshows of the various places we visited.

The buttons on the left will link to these pages. Each page takes about 5 minutes to view.

If you don’t have the time to read the commentary pages, then just click on over to the slideshows (starting with Shanghai).

If you don’t have time to look at the slideshows, or the commentary pages, then we hope you’ll come back when you do have the time. Look at it a little at a time !!!

In the meantime, sit back, kick off your shoes, and listen to some very relaxing authentic Chinese music on each page.

To END SLIDESHOW at any point, CLICK ON BACK ARROW on top tool-bar !!!

Before looking at any of the web pages, here are some of my personal observations regarding China---
China is a country of many contradictions.
It has multimillion dollar hotels  and restaurants, but no drinkable water running from their faucets, and many toilets that would not meet American standards.
They have huge multinational corporations doing business in their country (sounds like Capitalism to me), but they also have children working in sweat shops-- (See page on Child Labor).
They have many modern automobiles, but just as many (if not more) bicycles.
The older generation (just as we saw on our visit to Russia), seem to miss the Communist system, while the younger generation (remember Tiannaman Square) want their freedom, and to be able to get ahead by competing with their peers, and selecting their own career paths, and having as many children as they desire, with no government interference--(See page on Population Control).

As the saying goes---”China is a nice place to visit, but I never, never would want to live there”.
